ACDI/VOCA Inaugurates Two Livestock Market Sites in Ethiopia
ACDI/VOCA’s Pastoralist Livelihood Initiative–Livestock Marketing (PLI-LM) program inaugurated two market sites in Oromia, Ethiopia, and handed control of them over to local officials. Present at the ceremony were USAID/Ethiopia Mission Director Glen Anders, USAID/Ethiopia Cognizant Technical Officer Joe Hirsch, Oromia Regional Government Commissioner Habtamu Teka, ACDI/VOCA-Ethiopia Country Representative Brutawit Dawit Abdi, local government officials, livestock traders, pastoralists and other partners.
Before the official hand-over, ACDI/VOCA-Ethiopia collaborated with the Oromia Pastoralist Area Development Commission to sponsor a one-day workshop in which 18 participants were trained on the management, maintenance and proper use of the market infrastructures.
In addition to the Oromia sites, four livestock markets constructed in the Afar Region and one market in Somali Region were handed over by ACDI/VOCA to the respective local government officials earlier in the month. ACDI/VOCA equipped the three market sites with eight cattle-weighing scales.
